Case study: John's Web Editor
John is a 39 year-old bank clerk. He is a fan of fishing. It has been
his passion since he was 10 and went fishing with his father during
the summer months. Just 2 years ago he started a web site devoted to
fishing. Back then he briefly looked at a few software reviews but
settled for his word processor to create his first web pages.
John is now looking for a tool to help him improve and grow his webs site.
Over the course of a couple of weeks, he bought 3 different magazines
reviewing such tools. He also browsed the Internet to learn more about
web pages and HTML, so he can understand the technical jargon. One day,
he also visited 2 local stores over lunchtime to discuss his needs with
very helpful sales consultants.
John now had quite a lot of background information and started reading
reviews of well known packages as well as visiting their web sites. He
also found less known sites which appeared to provide what he needs. One
Friday evening John downloaded 11 different applications and started to
evaluate all of them.
Creating a few simple pages, he started to compare each packages in greater
and greater details and noted which one helped him the most. In one of
these packages, he soon identified a feature he found essential for what
he had in mind, and checked all the other applications if they also had
that particular feature. Sadly, half didn't, and he discarded them completely
from his tests. Of the 5 remaining in his short list, only 1 made it
really easy to do what he wanted. So he picked that one.
He then looked at the price. $89.95. The other 4 were in the $35.95 to
$129.95 range. John can afford $89.95. Even $129.95. But he started to
wonder if he could save money using any of the cheaper ones anyway. But
after a few more tests, he was certain that the application he had
selected was the best one for him. On Saturday morning, he woke up
early and tried his top 5 applications again, just to make sure his
choice was the right one. He was now sure. Definitively! He had found
the ideal application for what he wanted to do!
While toying with the application while still in trial mode, he started
wondering again... "Isn't there a way to use it for free? After all,
it already works on my PC!?"...
His reflex was to open Kazaa, and type the name and version of the
application he had selected. In less than 2 minutes, he found 283
entries. He refined his search and after downloading a few small
files, he was now in possession of 3 different license codes! He was
pleasantly surprised. After all this application was new. Version 5
had been released just 2 months ago.
In the application, he opened the "Register" dialog and punched one
of those serial number and activation code he just downloaded. After
clicking the OK button, a new dialog appeared, thanking him for
purchasing the product. The application was now unlocked.
John laughed. He could not believe it was so easy! He deinstalled
the other applications still in trial mode and shut down his PC. His
week-end started well. He just saved $89.95. he smiled, wondering if
he would have to buy any software ever again now that he knew how to
get them for free. And he kept smiling knowing his site would soon be
as he always wanted it to be...
Had John's preferred Web Editor been protected with Byssus Hydra,
John would have had no other choice than to buy it. Licence codes generated by
Byssus Hydra can not be shared.
