Case study: Irene and the professional graphics package
Irene is a 14 years old girl who is coming back home after 2 weeks
of vacation with her parents. They went to Italy for the first time,
and Irene can not wait to tell her friends about her trip, in great
details!
The day after coming back, Irene starts the computer her parents bought
for her last year. Her mother hoped Irene would use it to improve her
results at school. And they have improved! But Irene also spends quite
some time chatting on her PC these days. It's not exceptional for her
to spend sometimes several hours at once, chatting with friends on line.
Irene starts her chat application and is soon talking to her friend
Theresa who is the same age and who used to live in her neighborhood
before moving last year more than 500 miles away. Irene starts talking
about her vacation, but the two of them soon change subject. In the
course of their conversation, Theresa suddenly asks Irene what version
of chat she uses. It appears a new version was released while Irene
was on vacation. Irene quickly downloads the new version, and runs it.
Theresa soon points out to Irene the possibility to use avatars while
chatting. An avatar is an image that someone creates to represent
himself or herself on line. A chatter can have many avatars and can
change them in an instant. Theresa demonstrates some of the avatars
she produced, and the both of them start to laugh, 500 miles apart.
Wishing to create some of her own avatars, Irene starts the standard
Paint program that comes with Windows. But she is quickly disappointed.
It's quite rudimentary for what she has in mind. No worries though.
Theresa mentions she uses a professional graphics program, and in a
fraction of a second, sends a message containing the web address where
Irene can download that program. Theresa immediately sends a second
message with a strange string of letters and characters.
"Keep that code", she says. "It's the one that was on
the CD and you
will need it to run the program".
Both girls continue to chat and when the download completes, Irene
starts that graphics program. She types the code Theresa gave her.
Irene has no idea why there is a code, and in fact, she does not care.
A few seconds later she is creating her first avatar.
A few days later, she has so many avatars she does not
count them anymore...
Byssus Hydra ensures that a purchased application can not be
installed on more computers than the application was bought for.
